More and more obviously, there is no end in sight to the quantity of suffering that humans will and can endure. I started this site in response to the devastation of Katrina- and then of course Rita hit the next week. A few weeks later I was astounded by how teensy our American tragedies seemed compared to the tragedy of the earthquake in Pakistan, where it is now estimated that 42,000 people have died, and more will perish through the winter without aid.
